Overview:

Contestants may compete as an individual or as a team. There will be two categories of winners: pounds per minute and pure volume. Within each category there will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd winner chosen from the individual competitors, and there will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd winner from the team competitors. There will be weekly winners. There will also be grand prize winners, chosen by combining the weekly results, at the end of the 3 weeks.

Each individual or team will be allowed to enter the contest only once per week. For example, if an individual or team chooses to pick on Tuesday, they could not return again on Thursday and be judged on those picking results. The minimum picking time for contestants is ½ hour, and the maximum is 7 hours. Time is recorded based on span recorded from when the individual, or first team member, enters the field and on when the individual or last team member returns. Competitors may choose what day/hours they wish to pick within the parameters of 2pm on Saturday of that week, ending at 11am of the following Saturday, and only picking within The Happy Berry’s regular hours of operation. Weekly winners will be declared and awarded at 1pm on the final Saturday of each week. The Grand Prize winners will be declared after the weekly winners of the third week.

In order to have quality control over the berries picked, there will be “green/red berry penalties”. Judges will perform inspection pours from contestants’ pickings by pouring from one container into another, and taking sample cups from the pourings. The number of green and red berries per ½ cup will be counted. Based on the number of green/red berries per cup, a time penalty will be applied and a weight penalty will be applied.

First place - hat, & t-shirt
Second place - T-shirt
Third place - A hat

Prizes for weekly winners for the pure volume picked (Individual and teams)
First place - 25 pounds free (from the berries they picked),
Second place - 15 pounds free (from the berries they picked)

The Rules

1. All contestants must wear button/vest/arm-band/or alternative as provided by The Happy Berry to indicate they are a contestant and that no one is to put berries in their bucket. Members of the same team may share berries.

2. All berries must be hand picked of good quality with no trash. No shaking of the bushes, use of a drop clothes or other devices.

3. You can compete as an individual or as a team.

4. Contestants are not required to purchase berries picked as part of the contest except as noted here. Teams or individuals wishing to compete but not buy the blueberries may sell the berries to us provided they meet the 0% green/red category as determined by The Happy Berry judges. If they do not meet the 0% red/green then the contestant(s) must purchase the berries.

5. All team members must start and stop at the same time, which includes walking into and out of the field. The Happy Berry judge must account for all team members before marking time down on the entry form. Time will be recorded based on the first person out and last person in.

6. All participants must acknowledge that they understand the red/green berry penalties.

7. Teams may have as many members as they like. The result will be in average pounds per hour for the team [see entry form for calculations]. The pure volume category will be total pounds picked. That means the more members on the team and the longer you pick the bigger the volume. Limit is 7 hours picking time.

8. Since picking conditions will vary, the contest will run for three weeks, with winners announced each Saturday, and grand prize winners announced the final Saturday. The contest will end at 11 am on Saturdays, and winners will be declared at 1pm on Saturdays.

9. Teams and individuals may only enter once per week. Minimum picking time is ½ hour and maximum is 7 hours.

10. First place winners in the Pounds Per hour category will get a hat and t shirt for each team member and a 10% discount on the purchase of the berries they picked (if they choose to purchase). Second place will get a t-shirt for each team member. Third place will get a hat for each team member.

11. Winners in the Pure Volume category (the most berries each week) will receive free pounds on the purchase of the berries that they picked as a contest participant. First Place receives 25 pounds free towards their purchase, Second place receives 15 pounds of free and third place receives 6 pounds of free.

12. Repeat winners will be allowed to choose alternative prizes of equal or lesser value at the discretion of the judges.

13. Grand prize winners will receive some selection/combination of farm produce and/or discounts, and names on a plaque (to live on the farm).
