Greetings from the Happy Berry Bunch!

We want to say a great BIG THANK YOU for all your support so far this season and give you an update on what is happening at the Happy Berry.

First, the raspberries are at peak of fall production right now. The vines are really loaded. There are still some blueberries, blackberries and figs for diehard pickers. The picking time per gallon is up significantly for blues and blacks but they are still available. You will have to scout for them.

Second, we have raspberries, muscadine grapes and apples in the cooler. Muscadines are $3.00 per court and the apples are $10 per box(At least 20 lbs). These are grown by 2 friends, Jerry and Renee Lambert and Ben Kissam respectively, that have 2 acre or less operations but do take excellent care of there plants. The muscadine varieties are new and are intended for fresh consumption. The skin is tender. Just cut them in half, pop out the seed locule and serve as an appetizer or desert. The apples are Red Delicious now and there will be some Golden Delicious soon. The raspberries are $4.00 per pint.

Third we are in Honor Season. That means that much of the time there will not be anybody to help you. Just weigh your berries you picked on the scale ,calculate the amount you owe and put it in the AMoney Here@ box. If we are not handy we ask that those of you who are experienced Happy Berry supporters if you would help any new comers that happen to come during Honor Season. Prices for already picked fruit are on the board and the door of the cooler.

A word about Muscadines(Vitis rotundifolia). This is a southern secret fruit. They are a native grape to the southeastern United States. They have a unique flavor that has a delightful sweet background. They are a crunchy grape that is seeded. They are usually quite large. Sliced in half the seeds can be popped out and the halves or quarters make delightful addition to salads, served as hors d=oeuvre, they can even be stuffed. They make a marvelous jam which you can not buy anywhere, and they can also be used in pies because they are meaty, but do not overcook. The yellow or bronze ones are colloquially known as Ascuppernong@ and the black or purple ones are called Abullis@. Actually they are named varieties such as Darlene, Fry, Black Beauty, and Supreme that were bred by private and public breeders. There are more than a hundred varieties available. Another part of the secret is that they are neutriceutical too. They are very high in elegiac acid and resorcinol. The research that supports this was done in Mississippi. The good stuff is highest in the skin and seed. This has resulted in recipes where the berries (a grape is a true berry) are pureed and used in making unique breads, cakes, fruit roll ups etc. Walker, along with several cohorts recently wrote a chapter on the diseases of muscadines for a book that is to come out soon. The bottom line is that they can be grown sustainably. Most producers do not put plant pharmaceuticals on the berries although they do use fertilizer either Aorganic@ or inorganic to enhance growth, and herbicide and insecticide on the ground to control weeds and control borers that eat the roots.

Thank you! Walker, for the Happy Berry Bunch.
